Exciting...
Different...
Those are the words I think of when it comes to, "The Land of Stories" by: Chris Colfer. This is the kind of book I can get lost in, pretty much the exact same thing that happened to Alex and Conner, the two main characters of the story. This book brought me back to a place where anything can happen and not to make that sound cheesy, its just, I believe that books should transport you to place that you find intriguing. For me I need a book that will make me jubilant and make me want to keep on reading until I'm finished with it. "The Land of Stories" is undeniably one of those kinds of books.
The book starts by introducing some of the main and secondary characters, for example, Alex and Conner, who are twins and frankly get along really well compared to how most authors portray siblings in young adult fiction. Based on my experience through other young adult fiction books and in real life, this is a very uncommon for siblings. Although I do expect that this was done purposefully by the author, because if the author had chosen to have Alex and Conner have a spotty relationship, then the outcome of the book would be different.
The book continues with a surprise visit from their grandmother on Alex and Conner's father's side. A visit from their grandmother was like a small visit from their father, who had passed away the year before. One of the other surprises was a story book. Their grandmother had given them the old story book that she used to read to the twins when the were younger. Of course for Alex and Conner, this was like handing them the whole world in the palms of their hands. After a week past since their grandmothers visit, strange things started happening with the book. It started to glow, but not only that, it also started to buzz. This was not normal for a book to do in Alex and Conners world. But it was nothing in the world their grandmother had been a custom to for her whole life. Alex and Conner had discovered The Land of Stories.
The minute Alex and Conner fall into the Land of Stories, was the minute the twins had discovered their family's biggest secret. The story book that their grandmother had read to them for so many years was real... Yes, every castle and princess and evil queen that the twins thought were imaginary, were coming to life right before their eyes.
The new world they had fallen in to was a lot different then the twins' world, and Alex and Conner had no idea where they were. Then this was an obvious time for the author to throw in another secondary character that will help lead them around The Land of Stories. This character is named Froggy, and yes he is a frog. The main question of the book is how and when do Alex and Conner return home. Well that can only be answered by reading the book! Although throughout the rest of the book, the twins go through so many obstacles and face so many horrors that it was surprising for many the actual outcome of the book. Plus many of those obstacles included a fairy tail of some sorts making the book more enjoyable.
I highly recommend this book for people like me who are absolutely in love with the "Harry Potter" series and are fascinated with fairy tales.
